Getting Started

  1. Organize your `life` before beginning classes.
    • Make arrangements for transportation, finances, job, babysitting, living arrangements, etc.
  2. Purchase your textbooks early - before classes start.
    • Don`t wait in a long line and run the risk of finding no more textbooks on the shelf.
  3. Go shopping! Purchase the necessary supplies before you arrive.
    • Assignment notebook or daily calendar
    • 3-ring notebooks for each class
    • 3-hole lined paper
    • 3-hole notebook dividers
    • colored index cards and index card box
    • colored paper clips or tape-flags to mark reading assignments
    • highlighters - buy at least three different colors
    • Post-it flags - buy flags that match your highlighter colors
    • pens and #2 pencils
    • dictionary and thesaurus
    • 3-hole punch
    • stapler and staples
    • ruler
    • calculator
    • zip disk to save computer documents
    • book bag to carry all of your material
  4. Attend the first class! Double check your schedule, the times, and classrooms. Leave early for class to ensure that you get there on time.
  5. Organize a semester calendar or an assignment notebook the first week of classes.
  6. Get to know someone in each class in case you are absent or need a study partner.
  7. Discover your resources and support.

  8. Establish a daily routine so that you can fit fun things into your college life.
  9. Keep up with daily assignments by breaking them into smaller tasks.
    • i.e. break reading assignments into number of pages to be read each day or study session.
