Cornell's 5R's of Note Taking
Record
- Date and number your pages
- During the lecture, record in the Detail column as many facts as you can
- Write legibly
- Get as many main points as you can
- Copy everything from the blackboard/transparencies, or ask for a copy
- Learn to jot down words and phrases, not entire sentences
- Leave out small words; use contractions and symbols
- Use blank spaces (a lot of white space )when you miss portions of the lecture or for editing later
- At the end of the lecture, ask questions about points you did not understand
Reduce
- Within 24 hours, summarize the facts in the detail column in the Main Idea column
- Make a list of important key words and their definitions. Make flash cards
- Use a green pen (or choose another color) to underline points you're unclear of, and will need to review in more depth later
- Use a red pen to highlight the things your instructor says will definitely be on the exam
- Use a dark, black pen to underline the key points in the lecture
- Review and reword your notes as soon after class as possible
- Rewrite incomplete or skimpy parts in greater detail
- Fill in gaps as you remember them
- Arrange to compare notes with another student
- Find answers to any questions remaining unanswered
- Write a brief summary of the class session
- Listen to the tape of the lecture to help fill in missing information
Recite
- Cover the Detail column, using only your Main Ideas, repeat the facts of the lecture in your own words
- Memorize that which must be memorized
- Review flashcards
Reflect
- Create questions for the working space
- Write questions you need to ask the professor
- Create possible test questions from the notes on the facing page, including objective and essay questions
Review
- Spend about 20 minutes every week in quick review of your notes, and you will retain most of what you have learned
- Don't just re-read your notes
- Cover up notes and test your recall
- Answer all the questions in the working space
- Create a study guide for each lecture or chapter
